As part of the <strong>Global Classroom STEAM Challenge<\/strong>, the student teams partnered with international counterparts over the past 10 weeks to develop solutions to issues in their respective communities. Today, at an event at the United Nations headquarters, the teams presented their proposed solutions to a panel of government leaders, non-governmental organizations, educators and corporate leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on economic, environmental, and social issues, the students were challenged to work collaboratively to use STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) skills to build out possible solutions that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).\u00a0 Using a virtual classroom platform developed by IVECA, a non-profit organization that supports international collaborative learning, students worked in tandem to identify issues in their local communities, share perspectives and develop their presentations.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div style=\"width: 1920px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-18387-1\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" preload=\"auto\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/GCSC_U.N._Intro_Vid_v3b.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/GCSC_U.N._Intro_Vid_v3b.mp4\">https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/GCSC_U.N._Intro_Vid_v3b.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to give these students from around the world the opportunity to interact with their peers on issues that transcend their local communities,\u201d <strong>said Ann Woo, Senior Director of Corporate Citizenship at Samsung Electronics America.<\/strong> \u201cThe goal was to really challenge these students with the how &#8211; how can they be innovative in their thinking and use STEAM skills to overcome sustainable development challenges in their communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each of the schools participating will receive a participation certificate from IVECA, as well as a Global Classroom STEAM Challenge award from Samsung.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSamsung has given our students the opportunity to not only interact with like-minded peers across the globe, but to cross cultural barriers and gain invaluable experience presenting their ideas at the United Nations,\u201d <strong>said BeLinda Cross, teacher at Lawrence County High School.<\/strong> \u201cThey\u2019re learning that their voices matter and they truly can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The list of school teams include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ross High School\u2019s Butler Tech<\/strong> in Hamilton, Ohio &amp; <strong>Science Academy of KAIST<\/strong> in Busan, Korea are addressing the \u201cNo Poverty\u201d and \u201cZero Hunger\u201d SDGs by developing a website and an NGO to collect and distribute food.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Downtown College Prep<\/strong> in San Jose, California &amp; <strong>Zhenjiang Vocational Technical College<\/strong> in Jiangsu, China are addressing the \u201cClean Energy,\u201d \u201cClimate Action,\u201d and \u201cLife on Land\u201d SDGs thanks to co-developed devices to reuse recyclables and plastic to cool and filter the air and conserve water.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy<\/strong> in Erie, Pennsylvania &amp;<strong> International School of Tunis<\/strong> from Tunis, Tunisia are addressing the \u201cDecent Work and Economic Growth\u201d and \u201cIndustry, Innovation and Infrastructure\u201d SDGs through educational programs to create jobs and improve their economy through tourism and workplace equality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Lawrence County High School<\/strong> in Moulton, Alabama &amp; <strong>Luiza Formozinho Ribeiro Public School<\/strong> in Sao Paulo, Brazil are addressing the \u201cGood Health and Well-Being\u201d SDG through co-developed websites and a mobile app to reduce and better manage waste and litter in their communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A live webcast of the program will be broadcast via UN TV at <a href=\"http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/webtv.un.org\/<\/a>, and the United Nation\u2019s YouTube channel will archive the program on YouTube at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/unitednations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/unitednations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung\u2019s Citizenship initiatives focus on programs that enhance health, education and sustainability opportunities for children.
