SEOUL, Korea \u2013 <\/b><\/span>September 9<\/b><\/span>, 2018 <\/b><\/span><\/span>\u2013<\/span> Samsung <\/strong><\/span>Electronics Co., Ltd.<\/strong> a<\/span>nnounced<\/span> today that it <\/span>will open a new <\/span>a<\/span>rtificial <\/span>i<\/span><\/a>ntelligence (AI) research center in New York<\/span> City<\/span>, <\/span>the <\/span>U<\/span>.S.,<\/span> to strengthen<\/span> its<\/span> AI capabilities<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Located in the heart of Chelsea, the New York AI Center will be led by <\/span>Daniel D. Lee<\/span>, <\/span>Executive Vice President<\/span> of Samsung Research<\/span> and <\/span>a global authority in AI robotics, who joined Samsung <\/span>Electronics <\/span>last June. <\/span>With cooperation from <\/span>a leading authority in neuroscience-based AI technologies,<\/span> H. Sebastian Seung<\/span>, <\/span>Executive Vice President<\/span> of Samsung Research, the <\/span>New York AI Center<\/span> will spearhead the advanced AI research<\/span> in robotics. <\/span>As t<\/span>he Chief Research Scientist of Samsung Electronics<\/span>, <\/span>Seung <\/span>will<\/span> also advise Samsung on<\/span> advanced<\/span> AI research in developing future <\/span>business <\/span>growth <\/span>opportunities<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need now is to focus on creating new values that make people\u2019s lives easier and more convenient by harnessing the power of AI in Samsung\u2019s products and services<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said<\/span> Hyun-suk Kim<\/span><\/strong>, President and Head of Samsung Research<\/strong>, the advanced R&D arm of Samsung Electronics<\/span>\u2019<\/span> device business. <\/span>\u201cTo do this, <\/span>our<\/span> Global AI Centers, including the New York AI Center, must play a pivotal role.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Samsung has announced plans to expand its advanced AI research capabilities to employ about 1,000 specialists by 2020. This will be Samsung<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s sixth AI center around the world, and it will work in partnership with Samsung<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s other AI research facilities. The additional AI centers are located in Korea, the U.K., Canada, Russia, and Silicon Valley, the U.S.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>W<\/span>e are excited to<\/span> open <\/span>a <\/span>new Samsung AI <\/span>c<\/span>enter in New York, which will <\/span>specialize <\/span>in robotics<\/span> research,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said<\/span> Daniel D. Lee<\/span>. <\/span><\/strong>\u201cNew York is one of the world\u2019s great cities, and<\/span> with this new facility we will be able to <\/span>leverage the tremendous talent in the area. We also look forward to collaborating with top universities and academic centers in the region<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The facility is located at 123 West 18<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> St, New York. The facility<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s opening ceremony was held on September 7<\/span>th<\/sup><\/span> in New York City, with about 100 guests in attendance including President Kim;<\/span> Seunghwan<\/span> Cho<\/span>,<\/span> Executive Vice President of Samsung Research; Geunbae Lee<\/span>,<\/span> Head of <\/span>Samsung <\/span>AI Center<\/span> in Seoul<\/span>; <\/span>Professor<\/span> Daniel P. Huttenlocher<\/span>, the <\/span>Dean of Cornell Tech; and <\/span>Professor<\/span> David Tank<\/span>, D<\/span>irector of Princeton Neuroscience Institute<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>T<\/span>he field of <\/span>AI<\/span> has made revolutionary progress by finally embracing neural networks<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said <\/span><\/strong>H. The global AI Centers <\/span>will<\/span> contribute to Samsung\u2019s AI research with their unique regional strengths, and Samsung is expected to expand its AI centers to other technology and <\/span>talent<\/span>-rich areas to cement its place as a leader <\/span>of<\/span> AI research in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n
