This ambitious group of students was looking to compete in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-global-classroom-steam-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung\u2019s Solve for Tomorrow Challenge<\/a>, a program designed to demonstrate how young leaders can utilize STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to improve their communities. In trying to tackle the <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\">United Nations Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> one and two, no poverty and zero hunger, this team of visionaries went above and beyond to change the lives of many.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 1920px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-47993-1\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" preload=\"auto\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/GCSC_U.N._Intro_Vid_v3b.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/GCSC_U.N._Intro_Vid_v3b.mp4\">https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/GCSC_U.N._Intro_Vid_v3b.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/samsung-global-classroom-steam-challenge\/\">Upon collaborating with a school from South Korea<\/a>, the students recognized three areas largely contributing to these ongoing issues: lack of jobs, education, and economic resources. After reaching out to local farms and gardens, national grocery stores and major food chains, a lot of hard work follows the accumulation of inventory. They reprocess donated products to increase shelf life using unique recipes. From dehydrating and packaging to flash freezing and vacuum packaging, these entrepreneurs maintain the food&#8217;s nutritional value and eliminate excess waste.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Together, Let&#039;s Starve Out Hunger\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rCnc62t7S98?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nWith over 5.4 million pounds of food distributed to serve over 805,000 community members, these students have been able to see the impact of their hard work directly. <strong>Tom explained,<\/strong> \u201cWe can talk statistics all day long, but when you can actually see how much food is wasted, that is an eye-opening, staggering thing to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-47997 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/JEE-Foods-Boxes-600x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29102427\/JEE-Foods-Boxes-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29102427\/JEE-Foods-Boxes-950x713.jpg 950w, https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/29102427\/JEE-Foods-Boxes.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Members of JEE Foods continue reaching as they seek to do more for their community and the environment at large. They explained, \u201cIf food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.\u201d This realization prompted a new mission to preserve their planet, having already saved nearly 2.9 million pounds of CO2 emissions. The employees have learned how to distribute the food without increasing their Carbon Footprint through brainstorming more efficient production and distribution strategies. In addition to their current actions, they are aiming to become a carbon-neutral organization by 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat comes from our work with the Sustainable Goals,\u201d <strong>Tom said.<\/strong> \u201cIt shows them the problems in the world, and they want to see what they can do about it.\u201d This work did not go unnoticed as they continued to grow in size and spirit. Their social life becomes less important than figuring out how to help people.\u201d The experience of turning JEE Foods into a functional business has allowed multiple students to develop new passions, sharpen their skillsets, and find meaning at such an early stage in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>From an educator\u2019s point of view, Tom believes that his role is to be a mentor and facilitator rather than a lecturer. In explaining what makes Solve for Tomorrow unique, <strong>he said,<\/strong> \u201cSolve for Tomorrow is one of the only programs that specifically use STEM to solve problems.
