Enabling People,\u201d and we are committed to empowering future generations to harness technology for good. During the 2023\u20132024 school year, this mission came to life in Newberry, South Carolina, where <strong>Newberry High School<\/strong> earned the title of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/50-state-winners-named-samsung-solve-for-tomorrow-stem-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Carolina State Winner<\/a> in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/?r=true&amp;referrer=usnewsroom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong><\/a> national STEM competition, winning a $12,000 Samsung technology prize package for their school.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.Samsung.com\/Solve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/a> challenges public school students in grades 6\u201312 to apply STEM (science, technology, engineering &amp; math) to address local community issues, and Newberry High School\u2019s Career Lab students, led by special education teacher <strong>Heather Alexander<\/strong>, more than met that challenge. Their innovative project\u2014a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PNaW-bOpsC0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>pollinator garden and compost system<\/strong><\/a>\u2014not only tackled sustainability but also demonstrated the power of STEM to drive community change and inspire career exploration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"mosaic\"><div class=\"mosaic-tile horizontal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/29141807\/samsung-newberry-4-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/div><div class=\"mosaic-tile horizontal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/29141810\/samsung-newberry-2-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\"><\/div><\/div><div class=\"article-content\"><div class=\"article-body\">\n<h5><strong>Advancing STEM Education<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Seeking to aid the school and greater community by reducing the 1,440 gallons of lunch trash generated daily, Ms. Alexander\u2019s Career Lab class developed a sustainable, STEM-driven solution that remains in use today \u2013 over a year after their initial competition entry! The project focused on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Composting Food Waste:<\/strong> Students separated cafeteria waste into compostable (fruits and vegetables) and non-compostable items, reducing landfill contributions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Creating a Mechanical Composting Bin:<\/strong> With the Robotics team\u2019s help, a model of a mechanical, 3D-printed composting bin was created, designed to run on solar energy.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recycling Materials:<\/strong> In the future, plastics and Styrofoam will be repurposed into durable concrete pavers, blending innovation with sustainability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The STEM solution resulted in compost that now fertilizes the school\u2019s garden and greenhouse, and sparked a campus-wide waste-separation effort, showcasing STEM\u2019s power to drive lasting, meaningful change.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded product-module\">\n\t\t<a id=\"product-module-0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/solvefortomorrow\/\" title=\"Solve for Tomorrow\" class=\"snr-article_product-image\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.us.news.samsung.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/06102359\/solve-for-tomorrownewsroom-product-module-1.png\" alt=\"Solve for Tomorrow\">\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n<h5><strong>Inspiring Future Career Paths<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>To ensure Newberry\u2019s students can continue exploring innovative solutions to real-world problems, Samsung <strong>donated $10,000 <\/strong>on December 9 to further STEM education initiatives at the school. The funds aim to support ongoing projects that inspire hands-on learning and creativity in STEM.<\/p>\n<p>Samsung hosted the students at the nearby <strong>Samsung Electronics Home Appliances America (SEHA) facility<\/strong>, providing an up-close look at how STEM drives innovation in the tech industry.
