{"id":9987,"date":"2016-08-31T13:30:35","date_gmt":"2016-08-31T17:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/news.samsung.com\/us\/?p=9987"},"modified":"2019-06-18T21:51:54","modified_gmt":"2019-06-19T01:51:54","slug":"att-transforms-learning-pickens-county-school-district-5-million-wireless-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/samsung-newsroom-production.barbariangroup.com\/us\/att-transforms-learning-pickens-county-school-district-5-million-wireless-services\/","title":{"rendered":"$5 Million of AT&amp;T 4G Services &amp; Samsung Tablets Transform Learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>PICKENS, SC, Aug. 31, 2016 <\/strong>\u2014 Students in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickens.k12.sc.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">School District of Pickens County (SDPC) <\/a>are preparing to take learning beyond the classroom walls with free mobile internet from AT&amp;T, as part of AT&amp;T Aspire, its signature philanthropic initiative, and with free tablets from Samsung.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/about.att.com\/category\/all_news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AT&amp;T<\/a> is providing free 4G internet to 6th and 7th grade students and teachers in the district\u2019s five middle schools: Dacusville Middle School, R.C. Edwards Middle School, R.H. Gettys Middle School, Liberty Middle School, and Pickens Middle School. These students and teachers will receive 2,500 Galaxy tablets, donated by Samsung.<\/p>\n<p>Valued at more than $5 million over 3 years, the contribution is part of AT&amp;T\u2019s national commitment to the White House <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/issues\/education\/k-12\/connected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ConnectED initiative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t wait to see how our teachers are going to use these tools to help our kids learn and achieve,\u201d said <strong>Dr. Danny Merck, SDPC Superintendent.<\/strong> \u201cGiving a student a device is great, but if the student\u2019s family doesn\u2019t have internet access, that device becomes less useful when the student goes home from school. Providing both a device and access will open up so many doors for learning and put all of our 6th and 7th graders on a more level playing field when it comes to technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project will help students set goals and pursue dreams which may be far beyond any they previously imagined,\u201d said <strong>U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham.<\/strong> \u201cIt is truly an investment in our students and in South Carolina\u2019s future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the tablets and high-speed internet access, AT&amp;T is providing SDPC with device management capabilities to ensure a highly secure environment on ConnectED devices, professional development training for teachers, and with training from its Digital You curriculum that teaches students how to use technology responsibly. The tablets are equipped with filtering software which will allow students to access only age-appropriate content.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnology is fundamentally altering education, both in terms of how it is delivered and what is needed to succeed in today\u2019s global economy and culture,\u201d said <strong>Pamela Lackey, president of AT&amp;T South Carolina.<\/strong> \u201cAt AT&amp;T, we believe there is no better investment for the future than an investment in the education of children.
