Thriving Together

11/27/2018

As Samsung celebrates its 40th anniversary in the United States, we spent much of our year planning ahead to our “Global Month of Giving,” held each year in October, when we can focus on the truly impactful relationships we’ve developed here.

To us at Samsung, “thriving together” is an expression of a core company value: that we are most successful when our partners and communities also grow and succeed. It’s rooted in our history; we grew up after the Korean War, and the economic growth in Korea was mirrored by the growth of Samsung Electronics. The power and potential of these shared benefits is why we feel such a strong responsibility to give back, in our corporate citizenship programs and everywhere we do business.

It’s also why, on the occasion of our 40th anniversary in the U.S., we are also excited to celebrate the success of our partners. For example, the 18,000-plus schools who have participated in our Samsung Solve for Tomorrow program are both demonstrating leadership in STEM education, and solving problems in their communities. In fact, we’ve found that by giving middle and high-school students the opportunity to use robotics, IoT, data science or engineering to improve the lives of their families or friends, we can ignite their passion for STEM and commitment to pursuing careers in the field.

We recognize that as the motivating reason why people use technology – because it addresses an urgent need. We believe technology can and should provide a service, and so we’ve spent thousands of hours and millions of dollars to support veterans’ groups like Fisher House, the American Legion, National Military Family Association and many others with product donations, scholarships and training. Supporting the work of these organizations as they improve the lives of veterans, active servicemembers, and their families is a direct reflection of our gratitude for the incredible sacrifice that members of the U.S. military made during the Korean War.

We are also grateful for the everyday partnership of the communities where we live and work. Each year through our nationwide Day of Service, over 4,000 Samsung employees volunteer their time in support of over 50 community groups, including Harvest Hope, Boys & Girls Club of America, and Covenant House, often forging relationships that last years. And 2018 was no different. Through these hands-on days, we see the true success that local commitments, partnerships and volunteerism can have in fueling economic growth and social benefit.

The four decades we’ve spent growing with and learning from our American partners and customers have taught us the true meaning of the word “citizenship.” So here’s to the next forty years of citizenship, and beyond.
