Humans of Samsung: Embracing Mindfulness on a Transformative Journey to Korea

By Jennifer Daily

10/23/2024

On July 14, 2024, I stepped off the plane in Seoul, South Korea, and I couldn’t help but feel a mix of excitement, curiosity, and nervousness. I was about to embark on a journey that would touch me both professionally and personally as part of the pilot Samsung Ambassador Program. Little did I know that this trip would not only deepen my understanding of Samsung’s rich history, philosophy, and leadership but also introduce me to some of the kindest, most passionate, and most dedicated individuals from around the world.

My first day started promptly at 8 a.m. on July 15th. The Ambassador Program participants gathered in front of the hotel, awaiting a shuttle bus that would take us to Samsung University. After about an hour-long ride, we arrived at the campus, which is nestled near Everland in Yongin, Gyeonggi, roughly an hour outside of Seoul. The university grounds were perfectly manicured, with trees that resembled huge bonsais and wild peacocks basking in the sunlight. The natural beauty of the surroundings was stunning, especially since we were just outside one of the largest urban areas in the world. From the moment we arrived, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Samsung University team.

As we gathered in the “Vision Hall,” one of the main training rooms at the university, we quickly dove into the program following introductions. There was no time like the present! While we learned about Samsung’s commitment to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction, it was the kindness, generosity, and warmth of my fellow ambassadors that truly left a permanent mark on my heart.

Throughout the week-long program, we explored Samsung’s fascinating history, its humble beginnings, its visionary leadership, and the guiding principles that have propelled the company to global success. We engaged in thought-provoking discussions, hands-on workshops, and an exclusive tour of the Samsung Guide Dog School, founded by late chairman Lee Kun-hee in June 1993. The school, which supports the visually impaired, as well as therapy and search-and-rescue efforts, proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023.

My fellow ambassadors and I formed a community of lifelong learners, all eager to absorb knowledge, share experiences, and support one another. Our conversations flowed effortlessly, from HR and People trends to cultural nuances, with our laughter echoing through the halls. In those moments, I realized this program was not just about gaining company knowledge, but about forging connections that would last a lifetime.

On our final day, we had a three-hour mindfulness activity scheduled. I’d never practiced meditation before and was unsure if I could quiet my thoughts for that long, but I was ready to give it a try. As we moved through the session, I found myself able to center and connect with my thoughts. At the end, we were asked to write a letter to someone who supports us and believes in us. The goal of this meditation was to release any negativity and let go of the things that hold us back. I wrote a letter to my wife.

During the guided meditation that followed, the instructor led us to the person we had written the letter to. As he guided us, my wife’s voice entered my mind, telling me how proud she was of me and everything I’ve accomplished. He then noted to say goodbye to “our person,” when unexpectedly my mom, who had recently passed away, appeared to me. She expressed her wish to stay with me but couldn’t. She also told me how proud she was of me. Tears rolled down my face (which is an understatement) and I felt a weight lift off of me.

This experience not only grounded me professionally, but also personally. I felt stronger than I had just six days earlier —and I still am. One thing I learned about mindfulness is that it can be practiced through “active mindfulness meditation,” something that I’ve been doing over the past several years around this time of year. For me, carving pumpkins has always been a great way to release stress. Some may do puzzles or build Legos, I carve pumpkins.

Reflecting on my time in Korea, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have been part of such an extraordinary program. That experience was a testament to the power of collaboration, innovation, and human connection. It reminded me that kindness, empathy, and passion can bridge cultures and borders, creating a community that transcends boundaries even in a rapidly changing world.
